Product Overview: White Opaque HIPS Film for Cup Lids
White opaque High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) film, specifically in the 0.38mm to 0.45mm thickness range, is a premium rigid plastic sheet designed for high-volume thermoforming applications. As an engineered thermoplastic, this material has become the go-to choice for manufacturing durable, cost-effective cup lids, particularly for hot beverages like coffee and tea.
Material Composition and Key Properties
HIPS is created by modifying standard polystyrene with rubber additives, typically polybutadiene. This enhancement significantly improves impact strength and toughness while maintaining excellent rigidity. The "white opaque" appearance is achieved during extrusion through the addition of titanium dioxide or similar pigments, providing a bright, clean aesthetic that serves as an ideal canvas for branding and printing. With a density of approximately 1.04 g/cm³, this rigid sheet remains exceptionally lightweight, which translates directly into reduced shipping costs and lower material consumption per lid. Crucially, it boasts a Vicat softening point between 70°C and 80°C, making it highly resistant to deformation when exposed to hot liquids, unlike standard PET which struggles above 70°C.
Thermoforming Performance
The 0.38mm to 0.45mm thickness profile is the industry sweet spot for cup lids. It offers the perfect balance of structural integrity and flexibility, ensuring a secure seal on the cup rim without excessive material waste. HIPS exhibits superior melt strength and rapid cooling characteristics. During the thermoforming process, the sheet heats up quickly and cools down just as fast, allowing manufacturers to drastically reduce cycle times—often by 15% to 20%. This thermal efficiency not only boosts production speeds but also reduces energy consumption. Furthermore, its exceptional flow properties allow for deep drawing and complex ribbing required for modern spill-resistant lids without thinning or tearing at the corners.
Economic and Environmental Advantages
From a manufacturing perspective, HIPS is incredibly economical. It is generally 20% to 30% cheaper than engineering plastics like ABS or Polycarbonate. Its low processing temperatures (typically 180°C–260°C) further cut operational expenses. Environmentally, HIPS is highly sustainable within the manufacturing loop. Manufacturers can seamlessly integrate recycled HIPS back into new production batches—sometimes utilizing up to 25% post-consumer or industrial scrap—without compromising the mechanical quality of the final cup lid.
Safety and Applications
Safety is paramount in food packaging. White opaque HIPS complies strictly for direct food contact, ensuring no harmful substances migrate into hot beverages. Beyond hot drink lids, this versatile rigid sheet is also widely utilized for cold beverage cups, yogurt containers, soup bowls, and various clamshell packaging. Its smooth surface allows for easy UV printing, embossing, and adhesion, helping brands create visually appealing products while keeping overall packaging budgets under control.
