0.5mm PLA rigid sheet for thermoforming is an eco-friendly, biodegradable material based on Polylactic Acid (PLA). It is increasingly emerging as a potential substitute for traditional petroleum-based plastics—such as PS, PET, and PVC—across the packaging, food service, and consumer goods sectors.
PLA is produced by fermenting renewable plant resources—such as corn starch and sugarcane—into lactic acid, which is then polymerized. Its production process generates approximately 80% less carbon emissions than that of traditional plastics, aligning with global "Dual Carbon" strategies and the principles of a circular economy. The 0.5mm thick PLA rigid sheet features excellent rigidity, high transparency (with a light transmittance exceeding 90%), and superior thermoforming properties. It can be heated to 60–80°C and formed using standard blister-forming or hot-pressing equipment, making it suitable for manufacturing disposable or short-term-use products such as food trays, fruit containers, cake cups, cosmetic inserts, and electronic product display stands.
Particularly noteworthy are its compostability and biodegradability characteristics: under industrial composting conditions that comply with ISO 14855 or EN 13432 standards (specifically, temperatures of 58–70°C, high humidity, and active microbial environments), the material can completely decompose into carbon dioxide and water within 3 to 6 months, leaving behind no microplastics or toxic residues. Furthermore, certain newly modified PLA variants can even undergo accelerated degradation in ambient-temperature composting environments, thereby further expanding their potential range of applications.
Although PLA rigid sheets are slightly inferior to traditional plastics in terms of heat resistance (with a heat distortion temperature of approximately 55°C) and toughness, various modification techniques—such as blending, crystallinity control, or the addition of nucleating agents—have enabled significant improvements in their performance, allowing them to meet the requirements of most commercial applications. As global "plastic bans" become stricter and consumer environmental awareness continues to grow, 0.5mm PLA thermoforming rigid sheets are rapidly gaining traction across sectors such as food packaging, e-commerce logistics, and retail display—driven by their eco-friendly attributes, ease of processing, and aesthetic appeal—and are emerging as a pivotal material in driving the transition toward sustainable packaging.
